The Ballinamore ‘Cant’

Ballinamore Library ‘Item of the Month’ is Leitrim Guardian 1971 and among the interesting articles is one by Patrick Logan who writes about the Ballinamore “Cant”. Here is a brief extract from the article: “When I was growing up during the 1920’s we used to say that you could tell by which road a man came from to the fair of Ballinamore by hearing him speak. I still think that this is generally true. Ballinamore is on a watershed of accents. If a man came in from the north by the road from Swanlinbar or Enniskillen he spoke with the accent of the north of Ireland. If he came by the west road from Drumshanbo he spoke with the accent of the west. If he came from the south from Mohill or Cloone he had the accent of the north midlands. As a result of this mixture of accents many strange words and pronounciations were in common use in Ballinamore. These words and expressions might be the subject of special study but here I propose to write about a local slang called the Cant”. This article can be found in the Leitrim Guardian of 1971. It will be on display in Ballinamore Library during July and all are welcome to come and view it. Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 – 5.30; Tues & Thur 10 – 8, Sat 10 – 5, daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30 pm. A complete set of Leitrim Guardian’s 1969 to 2016 are available for research in Local Studies and many are available for borrowing from Ballinamore Library.
