Cowboys & Hero’s

Congratulation to Drumcoura for the gigantic success of this year’s festival.  The amount of people around surpassed our yearly family festival (7th to 14th August) at times with the buss they brought to the town, combined with the good weather, lifted everyone’s spirit.  The local business’s made a good effort to welcome the visitors with even a Wild West wagon provided by sheriff Smyth to bring in cowboys from the outlying areas.

Rutledge’s Drapery Ledger in Ballinamore Library

In June 1916 Rutledge’s Drapery on Lower Main Street, Ballinamore, by all accounts were doing a steady trade.  Each item sold was documented in a Ledger and this book covering the period 1915 – 1919 is the selected ‘Item of the Month’ in Ballinamore Library throughout June.   Some shoppers bought material and all its trappings; sheeting, canvas, skirt lining, braid, fasteners, thread etc.  A trimmed hat was a popular item and was sold for around 10 shillings. Ladies shoes cost over 8 shillings and a top of the range black silk coat was almost 3 pound.  A wide range of names appear in the ledger, the most prominent customers being Mrs Martin of Martins Hotel.  Hugh Logan and his wife of High Street also did a lot of business, it looks like they were tailors who bought their materials at Rutledge’s and they had a servant girl at their disposal.  Patrick O’Rourke and his wife who lived on Main Street also appear to have been tailors. The business ledger is a valuable source for research on the social history of one hundred years ago.  It will be on display in Ballinamore Library during June and all are welcome to come and view it.  Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.

Copies of this year’s Musical Drama 'Erin go Bragh' (1916 tribute) are still available in various outlets in town. (SuperValu, Murphys, The Nature Trail and Smiths). The show was an outstanding success last February and any visitors who may not have seen it then can now purchase a copy of the DVD and enjoy it at their leisure. (Cost is only €10)
