Pope Francis asked for the remains of Padre Pio to be brought to the Vatican in February as part of the celebrations for this Jubilee Year of Mercy such was the dedication of this great Capuchin Saint in the many hours he spent in the confessional.
Many healings have been attributed to the intercession of Saint Pio and large crowds always attend the healing Masses dedicated to his life. Seán Mac Diarmada Travelling Suitcase at Ballinamore Library

In recent weeks we have all been immersed in the events of 1916 and in Leitrim we are doing much to commemorate the Rising and to honour our most famous son, Seán Mac Diarmada. In 2008 the Adam’s and Mealy’s auctioneers combined to hold a large ‘Independence’ auction of historic memorabilia.  This was held in the Adam’s auction house on Stephen’s Green, Dublin on the 15th April 2008. A very glossy catalogue was produced and there were over 700 items to go under the hammer.  Among them were a number of artefacts in relation to Seán Mac Diarmada, mostly notably, his small leather travelling case which he used while travelling the country to various meetings.  Mary Conefrey from the County Library attended the auction on behalf of Leitrim County Council with a particular brief.  Bidding was both keen and brisk but in the end a number of artefacts were bought including Mac Diarmada travelling suitcase. This exhibit is now on display in Ballinamore Library throughout April as it features as the ‘Item of the Month’. Everyone is invited to visit the Library to see this item.  Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday & Friday 10 - 5.30; Tuesday & Thursday 10 - 8; Saturday 10 – 5, daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
