Spring 2016 Training Courses

April 24     Creating a Cut Flower Garden

May 15       Introduction to Designing a Cottage Garden

Courses at Leitrim Flowers are informative, enjoyable and interactive. Our 35 years’ horticultural and landscaping experience, along with our environmental awareness and knowledge of Irish wildlife, mean that the time spent at Leitrim Flowersis practical and enjoyable.

All courses are held on a Sunday - starting at 10am and finishing at 4pm - and cost E65, which includes tea/coffee and scones on arrival and a home-cooked lunch.

Courses are held in a restored cottage on our land where we have created a cottage garden that we use specifically for training courses. The garden has been designed and planted so that it acts as a useful tool for courses. The plants (trees and bushes also) are perennial, cottage garden favourites and all can be cut and used for bunches, bouquets and floral arrangements.

Leitrim Flowers is based in Annaghnamaddoo, Kilnagross, Co. Leitrim, which is six miles from Carrick on Shannon and four miles from the N4. We are less than an hour from Sligo and an hour and three quarters from the M50.

The Collected Stories by John McGahern

John McGahern was arguably Leitrim’s most famous and important novelist. He received many honours, including the Irish-American Foundation award, the Irish Times/Aer Lingus fiction prize and an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin.  Some of his best known works include The Barracks, Amongst Women, That They May Face the Rising Sun and Memoir. McGahern also wrote plays for radio, including Sinclair in 1971; and for television, including Swallows in 1975 and The Rockingham Shoot in 1987. His stage play The Power of Darkness adapted by Tolstoy was produced by the Abbey Theatre, Dublin in 1991. His short stories, collected in one volume in 1992, are incisive portraits of pastoral psychology. One, Korea, became a feature film, directed by Cathal Black in 1995.

John McGahern died on March 30th 2006 and we are now approaching the tenth anniversary of his passing.  In Honour of John McGahern, the selected ‘Item of the Month’ at Ballinamore Library is The Collected Stories.
