A great crowd turned up at Jackie’s last Friday night to see a repeat of last year’s final between McGirl’s and The Bank Bar in the Francis McGirl Memorial Cup sponsored by The Aughnasheelin Gun Club.  The result was the same as last year McGirl’s winning the Cup for the fifth year running, on a score line of (5) games to (3).  It was a great night of darts high scoring high drama all the way though.  For McGirl’s Michael McGirl, Gerry Mahon, Eamon Bension, Damien McGovern and Enda Lyons were outstanding, the rest of McGirl’s who all played their part on the night were, Barney McAdam, Tony McHugh, Greg McGovern, Jimmy Walsh, Shane O’Neill, Andy Ralph, Michael Walsh and Eugene Maguire.  For the Bank Bar: Conor Crowe, Paul Lee and Emmet Mahon played well especially Conor Crowe, the rest of the Bank Bar team were Brendan Mulvey, Mick Horgan, Sean Mahon, Nesaun Neary, Cyril Smith, Damien Flynn, Noel Plunket, Sean Quinn, Garbahn McBrian and Ossie Costello.
Ciaran Harty presented the Cup and trophies to the winners and runners up, and thanked everyone for sponsorship, during the competition.  The winning Captain Eamon Benison thanked all his team and Ossie’s for a great match, he also wished Eugene McGuire who is a member of McGirl’s  Dart team, and is in hospital a speedy recovery, it is the first final Eugene has missed going back as long as I can remember, get well soon Eugene from all at Ballinamore  Darts and especially at McGirl’s.
thanks to Catherine for refreshments, thanks to Olive McIntyre and Garry Murray for marking the games.  A very special thanks to The Aughnasheelin Gun Club for their generous sponsorship this year and every year.  The League Cup Competition commences on Friday night the 4th March sponsored by The Ballinamore League.  Draws to be made this week.
On behalf of the paper we would like to thank Andy for his meticulous dart notes during the year.

Mohill Workhouse Minute Books available in Ballinamore Library

Mohill Workhouse was built in 1841 and was intended to accommodate destitute people from the area; these people were often referred to as ‘paupers’ or ‘inmates’.  There were a number of electoral divisions in the Mohill catchment area for the purposes of electing Poor Law Guardians to administer the Workhouse system.  Lord Leitrim served for a period as Chairman of Mohill Union Board of Guardians.  Rates were collected from farmers in the area to help with the upkeep of the Workhouse.  During famine times the numbers entering the Workhouse grew and grew and by 1847, there were nearly 800 people in Mohill Workhouse. Minute Books from Mohill Workhouse 1839 to 1922, although, there are a few gaps in this sequence, are available for consultation in Ballinamore Library.
The selected ‘February Item of the Month’ is a Mohill Workhouse Minute Book from 1866, one hundred and fifty years ago.  On these long winter evenings, why not call in to Ballinamore Library and see this and many other Minute Books, to gain an insight into what life was like for those who spent time in Mohill Workhouse more that one hundred and fifty years ago.  Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues & Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
