Larkin’s Maps of 1818 on display at Ballinamore Library

Over the past eighteen months, staff in the Local Studies Department at Ballinamore Library displayed a ‘Picture of the Month’, as its name suggests, there was a different picture each month and these items were chosen from the Local Studies photographs, posters and art Collection.  This proved to be a very successful initiative and during 2016, it will be expanded to an ‘Item of the Month’, where documents, maps and other material will be displayed.
The January ‘Item of the Month’ is Larkin’s Map of the Ballinamore area in 1818 but maps from other parts of the county can also be accessed. Maps have a very special character and appeal especially as historic sources which are invaluable in local history research.  Most people are familiar with the First Edition of Ordnance Survey Maps in 1837 but William Larkin’s Maps are from almost twenty years earlier, in 1818.  It is interesting to compare many aspects of the current landscape with these earlier maps, for example how hedgerows have changed over time.  Maps can be used for many other comparisons and can be a fascinating primary source for research and a means of making sense of the past.
The Map of the Ballinamore area is on display in Ballinamore Library throughout January but staff welcome visitors to see Larkin’s Maps of the remainder for the County.  Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
