Christmas Lights…Volunteers Wanted

Yes folks it's time to prepare our town for Christmas. Last year we had new lights in the town.  Thank you to all those who contributed.  The funds made in the year have allowed us to expand our display. We hope to do this on a yearly basis for a few years and then maintain what we have. There is a lot of work in the display and unfortunately the lights don't put themselves up. Like many other events run in the town volunteers are of great importance so we are looking for your help this year Male/Female. We have set out dates to make things easier and anyone willing to give a few hours can meet at the Poor Scholar. The dates and times are as follows. Sunday 16th Nov 2pm, Tues 18th 7pm, Thurs 20th 7pm and Sun 23rd 2pm. The switching on of the lights will take place on Sunday 7th Dec. Keep an eye on these notes for more info. Please contact us if you are interested in helping. Dawn 086-3115647 or David 086-0870456

Film ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ Ballinamore Library
On Tuesday 18th November at 7.30pm come along to Ballinamore Library and see the film “The Wind that Shakes the Barley” This is a political drama from veteran British filmmaker Ken Loach. Damien (Cillian Murphy) is about to leave Ireland for his medical studies in London while his brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney) is an active IRA member. After witnessing an act of resistance to the daily violence of the 'Black and Tans', Damien abandons his burgeoning career and joins his brother in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom. Eventually, both sides agree to a treaty to end the bloodshed. But, despite the apparent victory, civil war erupts and families, who fought side by side, find themselves pitted against one another as sworn enemies, putting their loyalties to the ultimate test. Remember; Admission and all welcome.

Farmers Right Campaign
The Ballinamore Library ‘Picture of the Month’ for November is a framed document titled ‘Leitrim Roll of Honour 1966 – 1967 Famers Rights Campaign’.  It was presented to the N.F.A in Leitrim by Rickard Deasey, former President of the N.F.A.  It details the Leitrim County Executive Officers 1966 – 67, Chairman: Hugh Leddy, Hon Secretary: Jim Finn and Treasurer: Liam Ellis.
It outlines that on October 12th 1966, 20 Leitrim farmers started on a walk to Dublin.  They were Hugh Leddy, Joseph O’Connell, Noel Dolan, Peter Flynn, Larry Gaffney, Desmond Quinn, Peter Honeyman, Hugh P. Brady, Shay McGovern, Tommy Heraghty, Bartley Feeney, Liam Irwin, Michael Clancy, Pat McGoldrick, John J. Smith, Peter O’Connell, John J. Duignan, Thomas J, Heaney, Marcus Clements and Thomas Kelly.
Other farmers from the area who campaigned included Charley McHugh, James Gannon, John Harte, Tony Gannon and many more.
Farmer’s rights campaigns are very topical at the moment so the protests of 48 years ago may bring back many memoires to the people of Leitrim.  If this is the case why not call to Ballinamore Library during the month of November and see the names of the farmers which are beautifully written on this document. Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, with daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.

Irish Graveyars.Ie Have Recently Conducted A Survey Of Aughnasheelin & Oughteragh Cemeteries

Along with providing an up to date map of each cemetery, they also provide a service to view family plots on line.

To access details on line, first enter www.irishgraveyards.ie then click on graveyard search, then select graveyard under Leitrim. Click Aughnasheelin or Oughteragh as appropriate, then enter family name and first name of the deceased, then click search, and a picture of your family plot should appear on screen with the names of those who are buried in the plot.

We hope this will be a welcome service particularly for those living abroad who may wish to view their family plot especially at anniversary times.

You are advised to check details on cemetery map, re-correct location of grave, & the correct details of the deceased. Appropriate sheets are available for any alterations or changes.
