Comhghairdeas & Good Luck

Congratulations to Ballinamore SOH Senior Team who defeated Aughnasheelin in the Intermediate Football Championship on Saturday gone. This victory earns SOH a semi final birth where they will take on Ballinaglera in Pairc Seán at 5pm on Saturday 6th September.

Aughnasheelin started the match much brighter than SOH and quickly ran in a score of 1-2 to SOH 2 points. Wayne McKeon and Luke Murphy scored a couple of good points to bring the match to 1-3 to 4 points in favour of Aughnasheelin. As the first half wore on SOH started to take control of the game and Wayne McKeon again scored a vital goal which brought the scores level just before half time. On the stroke of half time Peter Reynolds put SOH in the lead with a well taken point leaving the half time score 1-5 to 1-4 to SOH.

Aughnasheelin again started the 2nd half well and were denied a certain goal by only a wonderful save from SOH Philip Farrelly. This save was the turning point of the match and 4 minutes later Liam Ferguson scored a wonderful goal for Ballinamore SOH which gave us a 2-5 to 1-4 lead. SOH remained in control and ran in a couple more points to leave the score at 2-7 to 1-5 when Aughnasheelin were granted a penalty which they missed. Mark McRory and Andrew Burn added further points to leave SOH with a 2-9 to 1-6 lead. Aughnasheelin scored 3 points to no reply with Ballinamore having a couple of excellent chances to extend their lead. With a couple of minutes to go Aughnasheelin again struck another shot wide and SOH ended the match victorious by a score of 2-9 to 1-9.

Leitrim’s First Motor Car

Staff in the Local Studies Department at Ballinamore Library are displaying a ‘Picture of the Month’.  As its name suggests, there will be a different picture each month and these items will be chosen from the Local Studies Photographs, Posters and Art Collection.  The September ‘Picture of the Month’ is a framed photograph of the first registered motor car in Leitrim. This car, an Austin Wolseley bore the number plate ‘IT 1’ and was registered in 1902.  It had been purchased by C.S. Laird in Drumshanbo for £380 and he owned it up to 1905.  It had a 10 horse power twin cylinder horizontal engine with 4 forward gears and reverse, double chain drive, with a right foot clutch.  Leitrim’s first motor car changed ownership several times but has survived in near original condition and was on exhibit until recent years in the Museum of Irish Transport in Killarney.  We have also established that this car, by then a vintage car, was part of a special 75th anniversary commemoration in the famous London to Brighton run in the 1970’s  The photograph being displayed in the Library throughout September was taken at the Spa Hotel in Lucan, County Dublin. There is also further information about the car in an article written for the Leitrim Guardian 2002 by Peter Tiernan and a newspaper article donated by Sean McKeon, High Street, Ballinamore, plus much information about C. S. Laird. As yet we do not know what year the photograph was taken or who the four people in the car are.  We are also tying to establish where the car was relocated after the Museum of Irish Transport, Killarney, closed down,  so we need your help to complete these details for the September ‘Picture of the Month’.  Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, with daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
