FORÓIGE YOUTH PROJECT
The National Youth Organisation, Foróige launched a PEACE III Leitrim Youth Support Project in late 2012.  Through the Lá Nua Office, a Ballinamore Foróige Youth Project was set up funded by Peace III.  18 young girls and boys took part in a Peace themed, educational, fun packed year which included a “Graffiti Art Project” that is still on display in the windows beside Supervalu.  Funding ended in Sept 2013.

Maureen Martin, Claire McGirl, Eimear Carron, Áine Martin and Cíara O’Dowd underwent” Training for Foróige Leaders” and  restarted the Ballinamore Foróige  Group.  Sinead McCauley, Kathleen Kearns and Linda Halstead have since come on board and have been a great help.  Thanks to Leitrim VEC for providing us with a room.  The young people meet every Monday evening for an hour and a half.  At the beginning of the year, they form a committee; elect a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and PRO.  The Club is then run by the young people themselves (supervised by the Leaders who are all Garda Vetted).  They decide what they would like to do for the term.  Through the Peace Funding they were able to buy a TV, microwave, kettle and some games.  The young people organise fundraising events, travel to other groups discos and took part in the HYPE Youth Festival.  They also took part in a “Drug and Alcohol Awareness” Programme which was run in their own Club by a visiting tutor.  Foróige will be recommencing in mid September and it is open to girls and boys aged between 13 – 18.

Picture Of The Month

Staff in the Local Studies Department at Ballinamore Library are displaying a ‘Picture of the Month’.  As its name suggests, there will be a different picture each month and these items will be chosen from the Local Studies Photographs, Posters and Art Collection.  The August ‘Picture of the Month’ is a framed photograph, which was donated to Leitrim County Library by the late Eithne Moran, Church Street and Aughnasheelin.  This wonderful picture was taken in 1933 of a group of boys from the Ballinamore area.  They were members of the Catholic Scouts of Ireland in the 1st Leitrim St. Brigid’s Troop, Ballinamore. The 16 local boys look extremely handsome in their scouts uniform. It includes the initial and surname of each boy but we are aiming to get their full names and their home place.  The names are S.  McGlynn; C. Daniels; P. Kelleher; C. McGovern; F. Conlon; J. Casey; A. Prior; P.J. Reynolds; E. Delahoyde; T. McCormack; S. McHugh; T. McTiernan; E. Creamer; C. Lavelle; G. Moroney; T. Mulvihill. So, the Library needs your help to complete the full details of each boy in the August ‘Picture of the Month’.  Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, with daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
