Ballinamore Family Festival
Another festival ended last night Sunday 17th with a spectacular fireworks display.  It’s wonderful to think a small town like Ballinamore can produce such a wide variety of events for the pleasure of all the family.  A big thanks to all the hard working committee and the stalwart workers for keeping everyone safe to enjoy the weeks music and entertainment.

National Heritage Week
Ballinamore Library is joining the National Heritage Week celebrations with a number of events taking place.  On Tuesday 26th August, there will be an “Old Crafts and Customs of Ireland” DVD being shown on the large screen at 8pm.  This wonderful film was recorded in the counties of Leitrim, Cavan, Roscommon and Fermanagh in the 1990’s.  It features Traditions like Making Mud Turf, Hay, Ploughing and Pattern to the Holy Well; and Trades like Tinsmith, Wheelwright, Millar, Cooper, Blacksmith and Creelmaker.  On Thursday 28th at 8.30pm, there will be a lecture by the renowned local historian, Seán Ó Suilleabháin.  The title of this event is “Surnames of Leitrim” – learn about the popular Leitrim Surnames and about the variants of Surnames and how they came about. Finally, on Friday 29th, Ballinamore native, Noel Sweeney gives a talk “Ballinamore in the 1950s and 60s”.  This presentation will include a photographic slideshow with many unique and previously unseen photographs of the town and it’s people dating back to 1960.  So, why not join us for some or all of these free events to mark your interest in National Heritage Week.  If you require further information, please contact the Local Studies Library at 0719645567

Picture Of The Month

Staff in the Local Studies Department at Ballinamore Library are displaying a ‘Picture of the Month’.  As its name suggests, there will be a different picture each month and these items will be chosen from the Local Studies Photographs, Posters and Art Collection.  The August ‘Picture of the Month’ is a framed photograph, which was donated to Leitrim County Library by the late Eithne Moran, Church Street and Aughnasheelin.  This wonderful picture was taken in 1933 of a group of boys from the Ballinamore area.  They were members of the Catholic Scouts of Ireland in the 1st Leitrim St. Brigid’s Troop, Ballinamore. The 16 local boys look extremely handsome in their scouts uniform. It includes the initial and surname of each boy but we are aiming to get their full names and their home place.  The names are S.  McGlynn; C. Daniels; P. Kelleher; C. McGovern; F. Conlon; J. Casey; A. Prior; P.J. Reynolds; E. Delahoyde; T. McCormack; S. McHugh; T. McTiernan; E. Creamer; C. Lavelle; G. Moroney; T. Mulvihill. So, the Library needs your help to complete the full details of each boy in the August ‘Picture of the Month’.  Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 - 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 - 8; Sat 10 – 5, with daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
