Town Steering Group
In Feb 2013 a Steering Group was set up with a view to coordinating ideas to revamp our town.  This group is non political, all are welcome and all opinions are taken on board.  A number of very well attended Public Meetings were held and subcommittees were formed.  A lot of hard work has been done in the background.  The opening of our new secondary school left vacant three school buildings.  With the proposed amalgamation of the national schools going ahead, it is vital that some of the vacant buildings be made available for Childcare facilities.  The Vocational School has lost their caretaker with the move to the new school.  A Men’s Shed group was formed and under the auspices of the Men’s Shed two Tús workers were secured – a caretaker and an administrator.  A Foróige Club is also up and running and have the use of one of the classrooms.  (Thanks to all the Leaders who trained to run this club). Some part time courses are also organised and it is hoped to build on this in the autumn.  Apologies to all concerned that another Public Meeting has not yet been called but a lot has been happening – the Musical, The Drama Festival, St Patrick’s Day Parade,  Easter Spraoi, Kayak-Run Triatlon; Angling Festival to name but a few.  Huge praise must go to all who volunteer their time so willingly and with a united effort we will succeed in getting more and more for our town. On Sun 1st June the South Leitrim/West Cavan Vintage Day will be held at St. Felim’s College; A Musical Festival is planned for 27-29th June in Drumcoura and of course our Annual Family Festival will run from 10 – 17th August with the Agricultural Show on Tue 12th Aug.  New ideas are always welcome by emailing Chairperson maureenmartin@eircom.net or phoning 086 1547788.

Ballinamore Angling Festival 2014

The match anglers were back in town again for the IFI Ballinamore Angling Festival this week.  The festival borne from the anglers competing in the World Pairs Angling Championship which highlighted the good fishing in the area has been resurrected to promote angling tourism in this part of County Leitrim.  The Ballinamore Angling & Tourism Association who are keen to interact with the anglers once again and get them returning to an area spoilt with accessible lake venues to include parking behind your peg at Gardice Lake, several loughs known for specimen hunting and pike angling and the Shannon-Erne Waterway, Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal, sponsored the event by a massive €500. All accommodation in the town of Ballinamore and surrounding area is equipped for the angler.

This coarse angling match only in its second year was fished entirely on Garadice Lake for ease of all entrants.  A five day match with four rotating sections on both Haughton's and Church Shore concluded with an open draw on the final day ensuring the end result was less easy to predict. The upper pegs at Haughton's Shore and D section at Church produced the top weights of 26lb and 33lbs yet the catches were fairly consistent all round. The wet and windy conditions experienced all week made it difficult for the anglers who were mostly fishing the feeder with the pole only coming into play when the wind was low.  Nets were full of Hybrids, with a few quality Roach coming in on the pole and several anglers netting Bream.

The festival was won by Roscommon angler Dara Finnegan, Ballyhaunis AC with 101lbs 07 oz.  In second place with 98lbs 2oz was Peter Jones, Cork fishing the match for the second year followed in third by Enniskillen angler Gary Drew with 91lbs 8oz. Brian Bohan, Mohill gained a very respectable 4th place with 90lbs 15oz followed by Sam Merry, Leicester, UK who was very happy with his fifth position and 86lbs 3oz.

The match organisers, Ballinamore Tourism & Angling Association and all competitors would like to thank the IFI and local landowners for their cooperation with this event.  Please refer to www.facebook.com/lakelandsanglingballinamore or www.irelandtravelplus.co.uk for details of the 2015 event which will be announced soon.
