PREPARATIONS FOR BALLINAMORE ROADRACES

Preparations continue for the holding of the second Ballinamore Open 10K as part of Ballinamore Festival on Wednesday August 10^th at 7.30p.m. Registration on the evening will commence at the Sports Hall at 6.00 p.m. and there will be Under Age Races for Boys and Girls on grass at the adjacent St Felim’s Playing Field starting at 6.30.p.m.  The events will be Under 7 300m, Under 9 500m, Under 11 600m, Under 13, 600m and Under 15 800m. These races are open to all and there will be numerous prizes.

The Open 10K will be accompanied by a 5K open to all comers. Both races will, as last year, have the same start and the same finish but while the 10K goes on a circuit along the canal and the Golf Club the 5K goes directly out the Carrick on Shannon road to a turning point where it doubles back.

Entries can be made on line to www.runireland.com up to the evening of Friday August 5^th and also by post to Patricia Griffin, Aghadark, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim.  Late entries will be taken at the Sports Hall on the night of the race.  The Entry fee on line or by post is €12 for the 10K and €8 for the 5K which is also open to walkers and joggers.  All participants will receive a T shirt plus accurate chip timing. There will be numerous prizes in all categories with a draw for prizes open to fun runners/joggers. An Entry Form has been designed and copies will be available this week at  various outlets but forms are not necessary as competitors can just give their address, club (if any) and category with entry.

BENEFIT SOCIAL FOR FINTAN SMYTH – The organising committee would like to thank all those people who contributed so generously to the recent successful fundraiser for Fintan. The venue, entertainment and refreshments were provided voluntary ——–Special thanks to the Commercial hotel and the musicians who performed on the night. Thanks also to those who help spread the word especially the local media and community organisations. Hospice Fundraiser – A generous and giving community make it possible for the North West Hospice to provide a wonderful range of quality services and support to patients and their families in the face of terminal illness.  This year’s show will take place in Creamers Field, Golf Links Road on Tuesday 9^th August.  The show office at High Street will be open from Thursday 21^st July.  Schedules are now available from Show Office.

It is hoped to get more youngsters introduced to hurling, a game that is capturing the imagination of youngsters everywhere, and it is the most Irish of sports as well.

Fancy Dress Friday 12th August
 
The 2011 adult over 18 or nearest offer fancy dress parade starts 9pm 12.08.11 with registration in the hall free of charge with tea and sandwiches served nearby, up the town. Usual categories will be judged from best dressed to lest dressed and from half dressed to undressed.  This year a new award will be given to the group who qualify as the
leader group of the parade, to qualify they must be visually stunning, bright and light emitting, pyrotechnics would be an advantage as would a musical ability and able to play and supply their own drums unaided, a marching band would have an obvious advantage here or even a band sitting on the back of a lorry, fuelled up, mechanically sound and
roadworthy. Applicants please use your initiative as the prize at stake will be worth it, yes the winning group judged in a hurry will in fact win the prize of leading the fancy dress parade. Canvassing will disqualify usually but in this case it will qualify and is encouraged.
A word of warning this year that only those in fancy dress will be allowed in the fancy dress parade, so spectators please stay out of it as a follow on “couldn’t be bothered parade” will start almost immediately, please obey the Stewarts who will follow on in close
succession with the ‘stewards parade’, no dogs or wild limousine heifers will be allowed in the hall weather permitting unless on a leash. The tea and sandwiches will be egg and onion, half with mustard half without bread some with butter some with jam and a sprig of
parsley on them all, no exceptions, the fancy dress parade may contain nuts, you won’t find it now, it’s on next month and your man from New Zealand who reads the Sun, spots says it’ll take up for the festival.

Summer Exhibition in Solas Art Centre

Location: Solas Art Gallery, (Upstairs in the Four Seasons Flower Shop) Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim

As we head into the summer season, there are plenty of activities and events that encourage us to make the most of the warm evenings and longer daylight hours.

July sees the opening of the summer exhibition at the Solas Art Gallery in Ballinamore on Fri 15th July. There are many contrasting styles and techniques in this collection which showcases a wide range of work in various media by both members and non-members. The resul…t is a truly vibrant and exciting exhibition.

For example, both Freda O’Keeffe’s exquisitely executed “Blue Iris”, and Ted Crompton’s intense and dramatic “Floods of Feb 2000” provide a wonderful demonstration of the versatility of the ever popular watercolour medium. While the superb realism of Tony Gunning’s “Blue Door” invites the viewer to reach towards the canvas, as though the door may be pushed open from within the painting. Local artist Colleen Quinn has produced several stunning pastel pieces for the exhibition which capture the very essence of the summer season, such as the wonderfully warm and gentle “Walking Prince”. Photography is also well represented in this summer show, with many local scenes including Jennifer Richardson’s beautiful “Reflections” The exhibition is completed by some engaging sculpture pieces by Caroline Rock, thus ensuring that there is something to suit every taste in this fascinating collection of work.

The exhibition will be opened by Jackie Maguire, County Manager, Leitrim County Council. It is a measure of her interest in promoting the arts in the County that she has found time in her busy schedule to open the Solas Summer Exhibition. Also having a personal interest in art she feels that” Art is what you like, whatever the type”, very appropriate considering there will be over 70 different pictures on view.

The exhibition opens on Fri 15th July at 7.30pm and runs until 10th Aug. All are welcome to come along on opening night and enjoy a summer evening at the gallery where there will be the opportunity to meet many of the artists while enjoying some wine and light refreshments. Alternatively, the exhibition may be viewed at any time during gallery opening hours, mon-sat, 10-6pm. Work is about to start on replacing the brick on the bell tower.  As you know chips are breaking off and the only solution is to replace the brick. The community Centre has also to be reslated, work on that will begin soon.

Job Seeking Skills Course

County Leitrim Job Club will be running a Job seeking skills course in Ballinamore Vocational School commencing on Monday 18^th July and running for four weeks.  The course covers all aspects of job seeking (including basic computer skills) and runs 10am to 1pm, Mon-Friday.  An attendance allowance is available to participants on this programme. VHI Cúl Camp in Ballinamore

The Cúl Camps bring great enjoyment to boys and girls each year and this year the VHI Cúl Camp will be on in Ballinamore from 15-19 August. An added part of the week this year is that there will be some coaching “as Gaeilge” for each group. So if your children can’t make it to the Gaeltacht they will at least hear some Gaeilge while at the Camp. It is a great introduction to Gaelic games, football and hurling. Leitrim County Council in conjunction with Leitrim Warmer Homes are currently implementing a further roll out of the Community Smoke Alarm Scheme. – Under this Scheme arrangements will be made for the supply and the installation of two smoke alarms. South Leitrim West Cavan Vintage Tractor Club

Peace Walkers – As you have seen over the past few weeks we are expecting our friends from Belfast shortly as they walk in pilgrimage from Belfast to Knock over 5 days. They will be coming into Ballinamore on Thursday 21st July and you are invited to come and join in the celebration of their Mass in the church on that evening, an occasion that those of who have been there before will know is a wonderful experience of the joy and celebration of the Eucharist. It is hoped that as many as possible will be there to show the support of the community as they journey on to Knock. If you can give any or even one of the walkers a bed for the night it would be much appreciated .After walking all the way from Clones they will be in need of a good nights rest. ATHLETIC CLUB
Some of our members who qualified from Connacht for the All Ireland in Tullamore. The Walking events will be on July 23rd. The next major activity for the club will be the Festival 10K and 5K Roadraces on Wednesday August 10th. There will also be short races on the St Felim’s track for younger age groups that evening prior to the big race. All runners, joggers and walkers welcome that evening.

The Leitrim Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association

The Leitrim Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association with the support of the HSE-West is hosting the 2011 National Conference. This will be held on the weekend of November 4th, 5th and 6th in The Landmark Hotel Carrick-On-Shannon. An enjoyable week is promised for children and adults alike.

The Conference Launch will be held on Tuesday July the 5th at 6pm in Landmark Hotel. Local Media are invited. We expect a good attendance of foster carers, social workers and childcare workers especially from Leitrim, Sligo, North Roscommon and West Cavan areas. Will take place in Ballinamore Community Centre on Thursday July 7^th at 9pm, everyone welcome.

It is important to note that times of yoga classes have changed. An 8 week course is available, for those of you who may take a two week break during this cycle may opt for the 6 week attendance card.
Cloone yogi’s – I am advising you that there will be no class on July 4th or August 1st. Baggot St. Yogi’s – I am advising you that there will be no class on July 14th & 21st. (The Centre is closed).
I am also writing to tell you that I will be celebrating a birthday milestone in November. So in my wisdom I have decided that I am going to run the Dublin City Marathon this October. To make it interesting I am going to donate 10% of my summer yoga earnings to charity. I would like you the yoga student when registering for your summer class to tell me your favourite charity.
The most common charity ‘voted’ by you collectively across all my classes will receive the money. So we are all doing our bit Of course I am happy to have a team of yogi’s to join me in the marathon, so feel free to register

50^th International Eucharistic Congress Communion . The third National Collection for the 50^th International Eucharistic Congress will take place next weekend.  We thank you for your generous support to date and we ask you to give what you can to assist us in the preparations and the hosting of the 2012 Eucharistic Congress.  Further information on the 2012 Congress preparations is available at www.iec2012.ie         

Special Eucharistic Adoration – On Friday July 1^st special 12 hours Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in this church from 9.30am until 9.30pm.  This is for a spiritual bouquet gift of continuous adoration of 60 hours for Pope Benedict XVI, marking his 60 years of priesthood.  It is important that all those wishing to take part commit to a particular hour of their choice.  To do this, please fill in your name on the sheet left in the church porch.  Each person doing an hour will receive a special signed card from Pope Benedict to mark the occasion.

Ballinamore Town Twinning – Sincere thanks to all who contributed to our Church Gate Collection. Some members and friends of the association visited Plouezec at Easter. They received a very warm Breton welcome and enjoyed beautiful weather. A return visit will take place here next Summer.

Ballinamore Tidy Town News – The judging for the Tidy Towns Competitiion takes place during June, July and August.  The committee would like some more volunteers on board.  If you have a spare hour or two could you contact Tommy Dolan 086  817 1587   or Kay Maguire 96 44013 or E mail ballinamoretidytowns@gmail.com .  The window boxes and hanging baskets were beautiful last year; we would love to see more of these this year, especially on Private houses.  We have a zero tolerance for litter this year, both in the town and on the approach roads.  Please bin litter or bring it home.

Ballinamore Active Age – The South Leitrim Active Age Forum will be held in Glenview Restaurant,(Kennedys) Aughoo, Ballinamore on Wednesday 6th July at 3.00pm.  Our next Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 21st July 2011 in Tráthnóna at 3.00pm. A full attendance is requested as this is the Annual General Meeting to elect new Officers for the forthcoming year.

ATHLETICS TRAINING BREAK – Ballinamore Athletic Club finished general training last week for the usual summer break and this will resume at the beginning of October. Training continues for All Ireland qualifiers as per arrangement until their event and will also resume for a period in August for National Community Games qualifiers. The next big local event will be the Festival Open 10K and 5K Roadraces on Wednesday August 10th and this year under age races will be arranged that evening in St Felim’s Ground

Ballinamore Festival

Our annual festival starts on Sunday 7^th August to 14^th August.  The festival is always on the first Sunday after the August Bank Holiday.  With all the recent bad weather it is nice to think that the festival is not far away and fingers crossed we will have put all the horrible weather behind us.  The committee are busy as usual putting together a great festival with fun for all ages.  So roll on August the 7^th!

Peace Walk to Knock. Thursday 14^th July –

Our regular visitors walking from Belfast to Knock will be coming through town again soon. The walk takes place over 5 days from Wednesday to Sunday with the group arriving in Ballinamore on the Thursday having walked all the way from Clones in Monaghan.  They have a beautiful Mass in the church that evening at which everyone is welcome to attend and then they walk on to Boyle on the Friday. Their only request over all the years has been that anyone that can give a walker a bed for the night would be much appreciated and the generosity and welcome of the people of the parish over the years has made their stay in Ballinamore the highlight of their pilgrimage. This year the walkers will be with us on Thursday 14 July and if you can help in any way it would make a big difference to those taking part. Please keep this date in mind if you would be able to give some of the walkers a bed for the night. We will collect contact details in the coming weeks.  Thank you.

All Ireland Glory for Mc Cartin SD

Following the CRN All Ireland Irish Dancing Championships held recently in the City West Hotel and Conference Centre local dance school the Mc Cartin SD recorded a massive success collecting 75 medals in both solo and Ceili competitions.  The six day Championship brought in excess of 3,000 dancers together from across Ireland and overseas.  The following pupils from the Mc Cartin SD figured amongst the winners:

People are welcome to take part in even a part of the walking.  Meeting of volunteers & those involved in the Liturgy will take place in the church this Tuesday 9pm.

Lizzie Canning R.I.P. –

Lizzie Canning No 6 Lahard, Ballinamore, died in St Patricks Hospital Carrick on Shannon on the 25^th April.  She was in her 86^th year.  Sympathy is extended to her sister Mary and all her relatives and friends.  May she rest in peace.

Music Concert for Longford Hospice    – The Norwegian choir “Sang Koret Fjelljom” will visit Ireland for the first time on Thursday June 2^nd at 8pm. The name of the choir “Sang Koret Fjelljom” means ‘The sound from the mountains’. They are a mixed choir of approx 28 men and women.  Choir conductor Martin Bredin has prepared a programme of a wide variety of songs: Norwegian, Swedish, Irish and England/America.  They will be joined on the evening by Longford County Choir and StMel’s Cathedral choir conducted by Fintan Farrelly.  A great night’s entertainment is guaranteed. Venue St Mel’s Centre Longford. Tickets €5 all proceeds to Longford Hospice.  Following on from the concert we will entertain our Norwegian friends with a night of Irish music, song and dance in the Longford Arms Hotel beginning at 8pm on Friday 3^rd June. St. Josephs Young Priest Society
A branch of Saint Josephs Young Priests Society has been established in the recent weeks, The purpose of the Society is to promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life, and to assist financially in the education of student priests who have a vocation. The Society was founded in Ireland by Mrs. Olivia Taaffe in 1895 and is approved by the Irish Bishops Conference. It has been started here in the Parish to pray for vocations and organise the activities of the Society locally. Next Meeting Tuesday 26th at 9pm in the church.

Fohera Community Garden Poly-tunnel Workshop

This hands on workshop will take place on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th April at Fohera Community Garden, Fohera Lane, Ballinamore.Workshop will commence at 10 am and will unfold as weather allows.  It is recommended that outdoor or work wear and strong boots be worn. Lunch will be on a bring and share bases.   It is envisaged that those attending will learn and gain practical experience whilst building a poly-tunnel. This workshop is free of charge and open to all those interested in the local community. Volunteers Needed.
 As part of the national preparations for the 2012 Eucharistic Congress, a special Congress Bell will be brought on foot to all 26 dioceses.
The bell is a symbolic invitation to all to join the call to faith, prayer, reconciliation and mission that is at the heart of the Church’s preparation for the Congress over the next year and a half.
The bell will be coming to our parish on Wednesday 25th May from Carrigallen , staying overnight in Ballinamore and leaving to Corlough Thursday 26th at 8am. We need at least 12 volunteers to help carry the bell, so if you can help names will be taken up after Masses at the weekend. You will need to be available for 8pm on the Wednesday and 8am to 11am on the Thursday. Thank you.

World Youth Day ( August 15th - 21st )

World Youth Day will take place next year in Madrid (August 15th –21st). A group of young people from the diocese between the ages of 18 and 30 will travel with groups from the dioceses of Clogher and Dromore. Eucharistic Adoration
The growth in Eucharistic Adoration in recent years is a great blessing for the Church and all who participate. You can come along each Wednesday from 9pm - 10pm in the side chapel beside the alter. Why  spend some quiet time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament for whatever intention. Everyone is invited, whether for ten minutes or for the hour, during this time of Lent why not respond to Jesus invitation..."watch one hour with me".

Pastoral Area - Recent Developments 
The parishes of the diocese have been grouped into nine Pastoral Areas. The Pastoral Area provides an opportunity for the parishes to work together in such a way that individual parishes are supported in their efforts to ensure that they will continue to exist as vibrant communities of faith into the future. We are part of St. Brigid's Pastoral Area consisting of parish's of Corlough - Oughteragh - Carrigallen - Killeshandra. In each Pastoral Area there will be a Pastoral Area Team consisting of Laity and clergy, over the past few month’s nominations for this team have been received from each of the parish councils and have been receiving training. This team will be responsible for discerning and co-ordinating the gifts and strengths of the community within each constituent parish, oversee pastoral activities and initiatives on a Pastoral Area basis, encourage cooperation and meetings among pastoral groups already active in the parishes, rationalisation of weekend Masses to enable cover by two thirds of the priests in the Pastoral Area. "It is necessary to improve pastoral structures in such a way that the co-responsibility of all the members of the people of God in their entirety is gradually promoted..." Good Friday Annual Spring Clean –

Ballinamore Tidy Towns are holding the 3rd Annual Spring Clean on Good Friday 22 April. Could all volunteers meet in the SuperValu car park at 11 am. SuperValu is the main sponsor of the Tidy Towns Competition nationwide. Bags and pickers will be provided and refreshments will be served by SuperValu after the clean up. If you know of a road or area that needs a good clean up we will help you organise it. Last year nineteen bags of litter were picked up on the Link road. Seven bags containing plastic bottles, glass bottles and drink cans were recycled. Thanks to Leitrim County Council for taking away all the rubbish.  St. Josephs Young Priest Society
A branch of Saint Josephs Young Priests Society has been established in the recent weeks, the purpose of the Society is to promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life, and to assist financially in the education of student priests who have a vocation. The Society was founded in Ireland by Mrs. Olivia Taaffe in 1895 and is approved by the Irish Bishops Conference. It has been started here in the Parish to pray for vocations and organise the activities of the Society locally.

Pastoral Area – Recent Developments
The parishes of the diocese have been grouped into nine Pastoral Areas. The Pastoral Area provides an opportunity for the parishes to work together in such a way that individual parishes are supported in their efforts to ensure that they will continue to exist as vibrant communities of faith into the future. We are part of St. Brigid’s Pastoral Area consisting of parish’s of Corlough – Oughteragh – Carrigallen – Killeshandra. In each Pastoral Area there will be a Pastoral Area Team consisting of Laity and clergy, over the past few months nominations for this team have been received from each of the parish councils and have been receiving training. This team will be responsible for discerning and co-ordinating the gifts and strengths of the community within each constituent parish, oversee pastoral activities and initiatives on a Pastoral Area basis, encourage cooperation and meetings among pastoral groups already active in the parishes, rationalisation of weekend Masses to enable cover by two thirds of the priests in the Pastoral Area. “It is necessary to improve pastoral structures in such a way that the co-responsibility of all the members of the people of God in their entirety is gradually promoted…” Benidect XV1 – Pastoral Convention of the Diocese of Rome  26 May 2009

World Youth Day (August 15th – 21st )
World Youth Day will take place next year in Madrid (August 15th –21st). A group of young people from the diocese between the ages of 18 and 30 will travel with groups from the dioceses of Clogher and Dromore. Ballinamore Pool News
The meeting of the Ballinamore Pool League has taken place and some changes have occurred, the Looby Cup will be Played first and will continue on the Thursday nights, the Pool League will start as soon as this Competition is finished and will change to the Friday Nights. There will be a couple of changes to the Break-off and these will be distribute round to the pubs as soon as possible and also we plan to have a set of trophies for the winners/runner-up of the league and a overall most valuable Player (MVP) award based over both Competitions will be introduced.

ATHLETIC CLUB
The second and final leg of the 2011 Leitrim Road League takes place in Manorhamilton this Sunday (27th) at 2.00 p.m. followed by presentation of medals. The races will be run this year on the track for safety reasons and there are the usual events for Under 10,12,14,17 and Over 17. All members can contribute to a successful outing for the club today and should be there in good time with new members especially welcome. Training will be from 7.00 to 8.00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday from now until the summer break.

Social Dance Classes In Foxtrot, quick step, waltz and jive in O’Tooles Bar Fenagh, commences Wednesday 23^rd at 8pm for 4 weeks.  Everyone welcome.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising dance on Friday 18th march,  to Donal Cadden and staff  of Kilbracken Arms for use of function room and  refreshments, also to everyone who donated food and raffle prizes and especially to Vera and Sheamus, Sean Donohoe and Kevin Logue who supplied the music, a great night was had by all . The amount raised on the night was €2,248.60 in aid of suicide prevention. Again a thank you to everyone who helped out in any way.

Lough Rowan Opening Day

Lough Rowan trout fishery reopens for the 2011 season on Sunday 3rd of April with the prospects of some exciting fishing for all of its membership over the coming year. Rinn-Shannon and District Angling Club are delighted to announce that the fishery has been stocked with 2,000 triploid rainbow trout of up to 4lb in anticipation of the coming season.  This is the first time that this species of beautiful trout have been stocked into the fishery. Rainbow trout are well renowned for their beautiful markings, hard fighting qualities and acrobatic displays once hooked. This significant investment by the club should compliment the existing stocks of resident brown trout in Lough Rowan and help to diversify the target species available to the visiting angler.   So why not come along and be the first person to capture one of these remarkable aquatic creatures. Membership and day tickets are available from all of the usual sources as well as from the lake shore on opening day. St. Josephs Young Priest Society
 
A branch of Saint Josephs Young Priests Society has been established in the recent weeks,the purpose of the Society is to promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life, and to assist financially in the education of student priests who have a vocation. The Society was founded in Ireland by Mrs. Olivia Taaffe in 1895 and is approved by the Irish Bishops Conference. It has been started here in the Parish to pray for vocations and organise the activities of the Society locally.
 
 
Pastoral Area – Recent Developments
 
The parishes of the diocese have been grouped into nine Pastoral Areas. The Pastoral Area provides an opportunity for the parishes to work together in such a way that individual parishes are supported in their efforts to ensure that they will continue to exist as vibrant communities of faith into the future. We are part of St. Brigid’s Pastoral Area consisting of parish’s of Corlough – Oughteragh – Carrigallen – Killeshandra. In each Pastoral Area there will be a Pastoral Area Team consisting of Laity and clergy, over the past few months nominations for this team have been received from each of the parish councils and have been receiving training. This team will be responsible for discerning and co-ordinating the gifts and strengths of the community within each constituent parish, oversee pastoral activities and initiatives on a Pastoral Area basis, encourage cooperation and meetings amoung pastoral groups already active in the parishes, rationalisation of weekend Masses to enable cover by two thirds of the priests in the Pastoral Area. “It is neccessary to improve pastoral structures in such a way that the co-responsability of all the members of the people of God in their entirety is gradually promoted…” Benidect XV1 – Pastoral Convention of the Diocese of Rome  26 May 2009

Ballinamore Women’s Group trip to Lake Garda, Italy, takes place from Ballinamore departing on the 4th of June to June 11th. Charity Fashion Show in Lough Rynn

A fashion show will be held in Lough Rynn Castle Hotel on Friday April 1st 2011. On the evening clothes will be modeled from local shops including, Kabuki, Klass, Whispers, Gannon’s, Dolls, Spirit and Spirit Kids, Murtaghs and Carrie Bradshaw as well as by local designers Eileen Abbott and Wendy Louise. The evening will begin with a drinks reception from 7.30pm and the fashion show will commence at 8.30pm followed by entertainment. There will b a prize for the best dressed lady on the night and there will also be a raffle with some fantastic prizes. ATHLETIC CLUB
There was a good turnout of members for the first leg of the Road League in Mohill on Sunday last. We hope for even a better turnout on Sunday in Manorhamilton when the second and final leg is run. Training continues from 6.00 to 7.00 each Tuesday and Thursday evening until Holy Week.

SPORTS HALL UPDATE
The Winter Season ends as usual with the time change next weekend. Users who so wish may continue with their current slots until Easter and beyond but those finishing are asked to note their final usage night in the Diary so that the vacated slot times can be offered to new users or existing users.

Noel Dolan, a native of Ballinamore and a long-serving officer of the Leitrim Society of New York, died at his home in Bergenfield, New Jersey on February 10^th 2011.

Noel is survived by his wife Sheila, by his sons Kevin and Tom, daughters Sheila, Maureen, Kathleen and Deirdre, by his sons in law and daughters in law, his 18 grandchildren and by his brother Peter (who was a star player with the Leitrim Minor team in the 1946 All Ireland Final) and by his sister Eileen.

The Carrickmakeegan Tragedy of 1942 is forever etched in the memories of the people of Ballinamore, when six young people from the town lost their lives in a boating accident on the Shannon-Erne Waterway, at a very deep point where the canal enters Garadice Lake.

Those who drowned were Sean Dolphin, Seamus Wisley, Maureen Rowley, Maureen Moran, Carmel Prior and Minnie Walsh.

The tragedy would have been much greater but for the bravery of Noel Dolan who managed to drag two girls to safety and who joined with other rescuers in saving the lives of the remainder of the group of friends.

Noel’s heroic efforts were acknowledged by the Coroner and by a spokesman for the parents at the subsequent inquest into the tragedy.

In the intervening years there has always been a close bond between the survivors and also between the families who lost their children and Noel Dolan has remained a hero to them all.

The last remaining survivor of that tragic August day at Carrickmakeegan is Mrs Bernadette Spollen, sister of Seamus Wisley. Just some weeks ago another survivor from that day, Sheila Martin of High Street, died at her home in Dublin.

A number of songs were composed in tribute to and in memory of the victims and in all of these the heroism of Noel Dolan was acknowledged.

In late 1942 Noel, who had attended Ballinamore Boys’ National School, Ballinamore Vocational School and Clongowes Wood College, started an apprenticeship with CIE, qualifying as a machinist. Six years later he emigrated to England and in the following year joined the Merchant Navy with the British India Steam Company as an engineer and this took him on the high seas to places like Bombay, Basra, Singapore, Madras, Dubai and Sydney.

In 1954 Noel decided to emigrate to the USA and settled in Chicago. It was here, in 1958, that he was to meet his future wife, Sheila Maguire, from Druminchingore, near Newtowngore. Though they had grown up within a short distance of each other, they had never met until a chance encounter in Chicago.  Noel and Sheila married in 1960 and took up residence in Bergenfield, the New Jersey town that became their home.

For a number of years Noel worked with the US Government in a Brooklyn shipyard and was to receive a Citation for Bravery for his heroics on the day a raging fire broke out on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation.

Noel later worked with PATH in New York and then joined the famed Macy’s Store on 34^th Street at 7^th Avenue as their air-conditioning engineer, a position he held until his retirement in 1997.

Noel and Sheila inculcated a great love of Irish traditions, music and dance in their children and they were to become world class Irish dancers, competing regularly at the World Finals in Dublin. Kevin danced at one final with the future Riverdance and Lord of The Dance star Michael Flatley. The Dolans were well known entertainers at countless Leitrim and Irish celebrations in the New York area and indeed their talents have been passed on to the next generation of the family.

In 2004 Noel and Sheila were honoured with the Distinguished Service Award by the Leitrim Society of New York at their annual Gala Dinner, on the night another well known Leitrim man, Shane Flynn of Carrick on Shannon, was Guest of Honour, in recognition of his appointment as Chief Executive MBNA Europe and of his efforts in influencing MBNA to open their office in his home town.

Rain or shine, Noel Dolan was a regular in Gaelic Park, New York and he maintained a life-long love of the GAA, with a special interest, of course, in the Leitrim Club and in all players and teams visiting from Ireland and most especially from Leitrim. He was a dedicated member of the Leitrim Society, serving for many years as a Trustee and was always to the fore in the various activities of the Society.

Serious illness in recent years did not deter Noel from his involvement and he never lost keen interest in all things Leitrim. Indeed, when the Aughawillan Drama Group performed their play Wake in the West in Yonkers, New York in November 2010, Noel was in the audience with his wife Sheila and his brother in law John Maguire and relished meeting many friends from home and from the wider New York area on the night.

This love of Ballinamore and Leitrim stayed with him to the end and in his final days he recounted many stories from his youth around Ceannabo to his close friend Brendan Wisley, who had travelled especially to New Jersey to be with Noel and his family in those final days.

There was a huge turnout of family, friends, members of the Leitrim Society and the Irish American community at Noels wake, Funeral Mass and burial in Bergenfield, all joining in celebration of the life of a very special man.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Noel’s wife Sheila, their family and extended family, his brother and sister, his brother in law John Maguire new York and sister in law, Mrs Eileen McGovern, Corduff, Garadice and to his many relatives, including his cousins Paddy and Michael Dolan, Ballinamore and to his many, many friends,

The second semi-final of the Francis McGirl Memorial Cup Competition was played last Friday night in Drumcoura, and like the first semi-final the week before a great crowd turned up to see the game, the semi-finalists were McGirl’s and Jackie’s.  Last week’s semi-final between Shortt’s (A) and Fenagh was a very solid game Shortt’s winning by (5) games to no score, but this game was very close and exciting all the way, McGirl’s just getting through on a score line of (5) games to (3).  The final takes place next Friday night the 11^th of March between McGirl’s and Shortt’s (A) in McGirl’s.  Thanks to everyone for their great support in our raffle, thanks also to Tommy and staff at Drumcoura for refreshments at the game.

Tidy Towns News – The Ballinamore Bring Bank centre is one of the most used in Leitrim. We have three clear glass containers, two brown glass containers, one green glass container, two drinks can containers and two clothes banks (one more clothes bank at St. Patricks Boys National school – which helps fundraising) After recycling please remove and bring home all plastic bags and cardboard containers. If there is no place in the containers for goods, do not leave your goods for recycling
unattended at the bring bank. Either (a) come back another time or (b) use an alternative bring bank site. The bring banks are emptied regularly. Thank you for recycling.

Eucharistic Congress Preparations -  will begin its pilgrimage around the country and will visit our diocese between the 18th and the 29th of May.  The bell will also be accompanied by four specially commissioned icons symbolizing the four stages of preparation for the congress—’Gathering’, ‘The Word’, ‘Breaking Bread’ and ‘Mission’. More details of what will be involved  will be available soon. Each parish will be asked to provide at least 12 volunteers to carry the bell on its journey through the diocese.

Tidy Towns News

The Ballinamore Bring Bank centre is one of the most used in Leitrim. We have three clear glass containers, two brown glass containers, one green glass container, two drinks can containers and two clothes banks (one more clothes bank at St. Patricks Boys National school – which helps fundraising) After recycling please remove and bring home all plastic bags and cardboard containers. If there is no place in the containers for goods, do not leave your goods for recycling
unattended at the bring bank. Either (a) come back another time or (b) use an alternative bring bank site. The bring banks are emptied regularly. Thank you for recycling.

Ballinamore Post-Primary Schools

Enrolment and Open Day will take place in the Vocational School, Ballinamore, on Saturday 5th March: 2.00-4.00pm. Parents wishing to enrol students are asked to bring the students PPS Number and a copy of their Birth Certificate.

Ballinamore Darts

The first semi-final of the Francis McGirl Memorial Cup Competition was played last Friday night in Freddie’s, there was a great crowd in to see what was expected to be a very close match between Fenagh and Shortt’s (A) it didn’t turn out like that, Shortt’s winning easily on a score line of (5) games to no score.  Thanks to everyone who supported our raffle, thanks to Freddie for refreshments.  The second semi-final takes place on Friday night next the 4th of March, that game will played in Drumcoura starting time 10.30pm and the semi-finalist are McGirl’s last year’s winners and Jackie’s.

Cinema North West’s ‘New Roots’ film festival to celebrate diversity and culture in Leitrim today.

Cinema-lovers in Leitrim have much to look forward to this coming February.  Cinema North West’s ‘New Roots’ film festival will see a selection of films being screened free-of-charge in Cinema North West’s cinemobile in towns across Leitrim County.

Cinema North West’s ‘New Roots’ film festival aims to screen entertaining films that reflect Leitrim’s many cultures, races and religions, to be enjoyed by newcomers, minority groups and those who have been deeply rooted here for generations.

All films are free of charge and will be screened in Cinema North West’s Cinemobile, which will be located outsider Ballinamore Sports Complex.

The New Roots Festival will also take place in Carrick on Shannon February 18th – 20th.

That’s the name of the local comedy group that will hit the stage in Ballinamore Community Centre on Friday11th, Saturday 12^th and Sunday 13^th February. They are promising patrons a great night of traditional comedy, with a variety of acts that will have you falling out of your standing. Training on Tuesday and Thursday between 6.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m.at the Sports Hall has now resumed and is well attended. New members are particularly welcome at the start of the year. Preparation continues for the Indoor Season, Sports Hall Athletics as well as the Connacht Second Level Schools Cross Country regional next Thursday.

An information night on the transition from primary to post primary school
The parents associations of scoil Naisiunta Bhrid Naofa together with St Patrick’s Boys National School are holding a free information evening for all  parents of the boys and girls of 5^th and 6^th class next Tuesday the 1^st of February at 8pm in the girls senior school.   The talk about the transition from primary to post primary school will be given by Joe Hunt who is from the national parent council and promises to be very informative.  Refreshments will be served.

Packie Duignan Traditional Weekend

The annual Packie Duignan Traditional weekend will be held in Drumshanbo this weekend 28th, 29th, 30th January. There will be lots of Trad sessions starting on Friday night. Saturday morning registration takes place at 10.30am in Arus Padraig near High St for the music workshops.

Top class music workshops are on offer with Leitrim’s Current All Ireland Senior Fiddle Champion Lisa Ward teaching fiddle, joined by two other All Ireland Champions Junior Davey on bodhran and Yvonne Ward on Tin Whistle/flute. This is followed by a junior session of music, song, and dance at 4.30pm. Sunday morning to finish off the weekend there will be the very much in demand, boxty brunch followed by a senior music session with Drumshanbo comhaltas and friends in Henrys. Clothing Bank: As part of our Green School’s Recycling Project and also to raise funds for our school, St. Patrick’s Boys’ NS now have a clothing bank on the school grounds.  All clean, used clothing, shoes etc can be put in a plastic bag and placed in the clothing bank, which will be emptied regularly.  The school will receive €4 per bag of clothing recycled.  We would appreciate any support you may give to this project.

Speech and Drama Classes starting up in the Shaylin Centre, Ballinamore on the 13th of January for children aged between 7 and 11 years. Classes will take place on Thursdays from 4pm until 5pm and will be run by a qualified Teacher.  During the class, the children will work on aspects of Voice, Drama, Acting and Mime, in a fun and imaginative environment. The Irish conversation classes in the Library are hugely popular each year and big numbers attend. They will start again on Tuesday  4 January at 8.30pm. S.T.O.P promotes positive mental health, assists and supports individuals who feel suicidal, are in distress or those who have been bereaved by suicide.
Music on the night by Carrigallen Band “BREEZE”. Finger food and spot prize on the night. Admission optional – Please support this worthy cause.

25^th Anniversary of the Club

The Leitrim GAA Supporters (Dublin Branch) invites you to attend the Supporters Club 25^th Anniversary Launch on Thursday 20^th January 2011 at 8.00 pm in the Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge, and Dublin (Entrance of Anglesea Rd.).
The 2011 Supporters Club will be launched by Drumkeerin native Joe Layden. Joe is well known to all Leitrim people as the founding Chairman of the Leitrim golf classic in Dublin. Joe, who is a successful businessman had an outstanding football career in the 1960’s representing Leitrim (Team Captain), Connaught (Railway Cup Medal), Combined Universities and UCD (Captain and Dublin League and Championship medals). Joe was the founding member of the Leitrim Golf Classic in 1990.
Declan Darcy, captain of Leitrim’s Connacht winning team in 1994 will be our special guest on the night.
A video looking back over the last 25 years will be shown on the night showing match highlights over the period and as many supporters as possible.
Joe Flynn Chairman of Leitrim County Board will address the meeting. He will be accompanied by the Leitrim Manager Mickey Moran and his selectors Martin Mc Gowan and Barney Breen
To celebrate the 25^th Anniversary of the Club every member who joins this year’s club will receive a special memento.

Senior Citizens Christmas Party

The Ballinamore Area Senior Citizens Christmas Party took place last Sunday in the Commercial Hotel and it was a great success, despite the bad weather.  The Committee would like to then the Commercial Hotel and staff for the wonderful meal they provided.  We would also like to thank the musicians and singers for their excellent entertainment, not forgetting all those who helped out on the day to make this event so enjoyable.  And a special thanks to the many people and business who contributed so kindly and do so year in and year out.  All sponsorships and donations will be acknowledges early in the New Year.  Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and good health and happiness in 2011.

St. Stephen’s Day Table Quiz in Aid of Goal

Blazers Basketball Club will be holding their annual table quiz in aid of Goal on St. Stephen’s Day at 4pm in Smyth’s Siopa Ól.  This year there is a slight twist as the theme will be Sports and Soaps!  So start getting your teams of 4 ready, keeping in mind you’ll be needing a ‘TV soaps expert on your team!

Christmas quiz for Palestine  –

Next Monday night the 27th, please support the annual quiz in aid of Palestine, teach tàbhairne Mac Feargail 9.46 pm. General knowledge will be an advantage on the night but far more important is to arrive bearing gifts, which will be transferred into raffle/spot prizes, last year such was the generosity of those in attendance that the time taken for the raffle draw exceeded the ten rounds of the quiz! The result being that everybody is a winner, especially the various causes/people in the Gaza/West Bank territories who are handed the proceeds of the quiz directly, guaranteed no admin costs. Always a great cause and a great nights craic, Chifidh sibh ansin agus Nollaig Shona daoibh.

A new Ecumenical Gospel Choir is being formed in the South Leitrim area.  The aim of this choir is: (a) to bring people from all religions and cultural backgrounds together to share and enjoy gospel music and (b) to work towards achieving a standard that will enable us to perform for theatres, corporate events, charity events etc. Gospel music is the soul of religious music! ATHLETIC CLUB
Training has finished for the Christmas break and will resume, if weather permits, on Tuesday January 11th at 6.00 p.m. when the emphasis will be on preparation for Indoor and Sports Hall Athletics. If the event is not postponed and weather permits travel six of our members are scheduled to compete in the All Ireland Uneven Ages Cross Country Championships in Tullamore this Sunday.
