Keeping Fit in Leitrim
Do you want to get fit, have some fun and enjoy Leitrim’s stunning scenery at leisurely pace? Why not take part in “Outdoor Fitness” a 6 week programme spread over 3 months, with hill walking the 1^st Sunday of each month and orienteering the 3^rd Sunday of each month. The hill walking events will take place in Leitrim on Sunday 5^th September, Sunday 3^rd October, and Sunday 7^th November, meeting and registration at Manorhamilton Castle and Heritage Centre, Leitrim and @10.30am.on these dates. Rehab Church Gate Collections play an very important part in the Rehab fundraising calendar. All monies raised go towards priority projects which include National Learning Network and RehabCare in the county. A Sense of Place Exhibition
The ‘Support for the Protestant Community Programme’ which is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and a part of the County Leitrim Peace III Partnership Phase 1 Action Plan (Priority 1.1) launches a significant Exhibition:  ‘A Sense of Place’ and Cultural Evening on Friday 20^th August at 7.30pm, Ramada Hotel Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim.
The Cultural Evening includes a number of musical performances by local groups as well as Session Beat, which perform traditional Scottish and Irish music.   ‘A Sense of Place’ Exhibition, is the result of a creative storytelling project which presents a glimpse of personal, family and community history of minority faith, capturing colourful characters,  important events and both the  individual and collective ‘sense of place’ in the County. ATHLETIC CLUB
This weekend a number of our members are competing in the HSE Sponsored National Community Games at Athlone IT. This is the last national event of the current track and field season and the athletes concerned will have a number of weeks rest before cross country begins in October.

SPORTS HALL
With the longer nights fast approaching bookings will be taken from next week for the use of the Sports Hall during September and October. The Winter Season programme will, as usual, commence at the beginning of November.

Children’s Eye Screening.
A Special Eye screening programme will run for all children/teenagers for the month of September at our clinic in Ballinamore. The campaign is designed to offer a 6 point screening process to children of school-going age to detect
early signs of vision problems in children.  It is a more thorough and detailed screening than the screening available in the national schools. It also reduces the waiting time currently experienced by parents for children’s eye screening through the HSE and schools. It is hoped that all parents will become aware of the importance of early visual screening of children. Early detection can prevent many problems later on in life. Researchers agree that many
learning difficulties experienced by children have links to visual deficiencies.
This programme is strictly by appointment only and a full visual report will be given to all parents. If you require further information, or if you wish to make

This has to be one of the best ever festivals!  Congratulations to the committee, and all the very hard working stewards, to everyone who had a hand in this amazingly successful festival.  I know from my past experience that the committee put in a marathon effort over many months to make sure the festival is entertaining and safe for everyone attending, a big thank you to our Garda service.  It’s hard to pick out events but the common consent was that everyone had a great time.  In these times of recession it’s amazing that any festival can survive let alone get larger attendances, this I think comes from its reputation and a guarantee of fun for all.  The weather was the icing on the cake, and amazingly the fancy dress party went off without its usual torrents of rain.  To finish off this hugely successful festival, the Fireworks, which were advertised as bigger and better, talk about an understatement? They were tremendous, the best ever seen in Ballinamore, I would have been so disappointed if I had missed them (my sight is not fully back but it was worth it).

The great clean up

The committee and the people of Ballinamore would like to thank all the wonderful work done by the Leitrim County Council in the speedy clean up each morning during the festival.  Litter is always a problem, but especially during a street festival such as ours is.  But everyday the hard working staff of the Leitrim County Council was there and left our town clean as a new pin, ready for the next onslaught!  Without this help the town would not have so attractive and welcoming to all our visitors.  Many thanks.

Speech and Drama Classes
Starting in September in the Shaylin Centre, Ballinamore for kids aged between 7 and 11 years. Hugh Piggott - Build your own Wind Turbine

Everyone on the course works together to build one wind turbine over the duration of the course, which is held in Ballinamore.
No previous skills are required as everything is taught as we go along. The course involves metal work, welding, wood carving with hand tools and soldering amongst other things involved in building a wind turbine to produce electricity.

The particular type of turbine which is built on our course is designed by world renowned turbine designer Hugh Piggott and he comes to Ireland only once a year, in September, to teach on our workshop.

This is the first year that this special workshop, featuring Hugh Piggott, is being held in Ballinamore.

Not only is there a Festival in Ballinamore but there is a festival of memories opening at the Solas Gallery in Ballinamore, this Friday the 13th August at 7.30. “Memory Lane “is the new exhibition by well known Ballinamore artist, Colleen Quinn, her second solo show at the Gallery since its opening.

BALLINAMORE FESTIVAL LITERARY HERITAGE TOUR
As a result of overwhelming demand, the Literary Heritage Tour makes a welcome return to this year’s festival, on Wednesday 11^th August. The tour will be led by Dr Frank Brennan and will incorporate a bus trip around the area, stopping at various points of interest including John McGahern’s grave in Aughawillan and the Glenview Folk Museum at Kennedy’s, Aughoo. This year’s programme will include many new and interesting anecdotes and promises to surpass the outstanding entertainment of previous years. The event will commence from the library at 2.00 p.m. sharp and will return to Ballinamore at about 6.00. Spaces are limited so it is essential to reserve a place either through the library (071 96 45566) or Damien Prior (071 96 44884).

Wanderings in Leitrim and Afar by Kevin J. O’Connell
The Launch of Wanderings in Leitrim and Afar by Kevin J. O’Connell will take place in Ballinamore Library on Thursday August 12^th at 8pm   Kevin was born near Ballinamore and was working as an engineer with RTE, he served in many roles with RTE, progressing to Director of Engineering for 13 years prior to his retirement.  His newly published book Wanderings in Leitrim and Afar chronicles a journey into his personal history and growing up Ballinamore.  The book cover a broad range of topics and wider horizons ie poetry, plays and much more.

The Citizens Information Mobile Unit will be at the Ballinamore Show on Tuesday 10^th August;  in Mohill on Wednesday 11^th August 2010 from 10:30am -3pm; Dromod 4pm – 5pm and in Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday 12 August from 10:30am – 4pm. Speech and Drama Classes
Starting in September in the Shaylin Centre, Ballinamore for kids aged between 7 and 11 years. Classes will take place on Thursday’s afterschool and will be run by a qualified Teacher.  During the class, the kids will work on aspects of Voice, Drama, Acting and Mime, in a fun and imaginative environment. They will also have an opportunity to compete in feiseanna and achieve Irish Board of Speech and Drama grades.

Historical address to Bishop Patrick Finegan to be displayed in BallinamoreLibrary after 100 years
A historic illuminated address presented by the people of Ballinamore to their parish priest Reverend Patrick Finegan, as he was about to become Bishop of Kilmore in 1910 will be put on public display in Ballinamore Library.

Fr Finegan served as parish priest of Oughteragh/Ballinamore from 30^th October 1908 until 13^th August 1910. He was held in high esteem by the people of Ballinamore, so much so that he was presented with an elaborate and eloquent address, in which he was praised for his ‘piety, scholarship and patriotism’ and described a ‘Father, Guide and Friend’. 

This framed address is now being launched in Leitrim County Library, Ballinamore on Friday August 13^th at 4pm.  The launch will mark 100 years from the address was presented to Bishop Finegan.  It is quite a unique event and everyone is welcome.

What a wonderful job the Tidy Towns committee and workers have done this year and every year to keep Ballinamore looking colourful and attractive.  And also the brilliant job most of the town business and residents have made with beautiful arrays of flowers.  And a special thanks to the people in Ballinamore Rehab who work throughout the year to keep parts of Ballinamore tidy.  Now it’s up to us to be more careful of how we get rid of our rubbish and at all times BIN IT.

BALLINAMORE ROADRACE ON WEDNESDAY
 There will be some traffic disruption for a short time on Wednesday evening around 7 30 p.m. because of above. Race Headquarters will be at the Sports Hall, both 10K and 5K will start just below Sean O Heslin GAA Park and both will finish at Mean Scoil Fatima with the 5K going straight out past Ardrum and the 10K up by the Golf Course and coming in by Ballyduff. Parking will be restricted for a period on Swanlinbar Road and on Golf Course Road from McWeeneys up. While the races are coming down the Main Street through traffic should divert via Tesco. All are asked to co-operate with the Gardai and stewards
