St. Stephen’s Day Table Quiz in Aid of Goal

Blazers Basketball Club will be holding their annual table quiz in aid of Goal on St. Stephen’s Day at 4pm in Smyth’s Siopa Ól.

This year there is a slight twist as the theme will be Sports and Soaps!  So start getting your teams of 4 ready, keeping in mind you’ll be needing a ‘TV soaps’ expert on your team!

St Vincent de Paul Annual Collection
The collection will be held on Saturday and Sunday 11th/12th December. All monies collected on these dates are spent locally.  Thank you for past years contribution, and we appeal to the generous people of Ballinamore to again support this very worthy cause.

Senior Citizen Christmas PartyThe annual Senior Citizen Christmas Party will be held next Sunday 12th December in the Commercial from 2.30pm to 8pm.  Tickets are presently being distributed.  If any senior citizen is forgotten or over looked please feel free to come along without a ticket.  Looking forward to seeing you all.

Tráthnóna Social Housing  – The St Vincent de Paul Society in Ballinamore has 25 housing units at Tráthnóna, on the Cavan Road at the edge of the town.  At the centre of the complex is a social centre where residents meet for various activities and to where a physiotherapist comes on a number of days each week.  The units are occupied mostly by Senior Citizens at a nominal rent.  As the year draws to a close, the waiting list for the houses is being updated, so if there is anyone who would like to be put on the list please contact any member of the local St Vincent de Paul or phone 086 1236207.

Clothing Bank:  As part of our Green School’s Recycling Project and also to raise funds for our school, St. Patrick’s Boys’ NS now have a clothing bank on the school grounds.  All clean, used clothing, shoes etc can be put in a plastic bag and placed in the clothing bank, which will be emptied regularly.  The school will receive €4 per bag of clothing recycled.  We would appreciate any support you may give to this project.

BALLINAMORE POST PRIMARY PARENT’S ASSOCIATION
a meeting in respect of the above will be held on Tuesday 7th Dec, 2010 in St Felim’s at 9pm.  Matters for discussion will include – cutbacks -  CAO application – requirement of French for third level institutions etc., your attendance would be much appreciated.

ATHLETIC CLUB - On Friday night last week Colin Griffin received the Leitrim Sports Partnership Top Sports Award for 2010 and on Sunday Ryan O Rourke won an All Ireland Under 14 Boys Cross Country bronze medal as a member of the Connacht Team at the Even Ages Championships in Derry. The Uneven ages event is i n Tullamore on December 19th and six club members have qualified. Club training continues for the next two weeks Tuesday and Thursday at 6.00 p.m. with the emphasis now on preparing for the Indoor Athletics season after Christmas which will include the new Primary Schools competition.

Church of Ireland
The Church of Ireland, Church Street, Ballinamore, Sunday service is at 12.15pm every Sunday except on the 4th Sunday which is held in Drumreilly Church, Drumreilly.

BALLINAMORE TIDY TOWNS
would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the recent successful Table Quiz. Thank you to all the businesses and private individuals, who sponsored prizes, sent in cheques and cash contributions but was unable to attend a very enjoyable night. Thank you to Noel and Alan for organising the questions. We hold fundraising events each year to fund our running expenses. This year we gained an additional six points in the National Tidy Towns
Competition, achieving an overall score of 265 points. Our committee is as follows – Chairperson Tommy Dolan, Secretary Liz Lennon and Treasurer Declan Cumiskey.

Library News. – Now that the long cold nights are here and Christmas is just around the corner, it is an ideal time to pay a visit to the local library and browse through the large selection of books there, with something to suit all tastes. Now in sock you will find a cheery selection of Christmas books for children and these can be borrowed free of charge. Another treat which will be available in the library on Saturdays at 11am and 2pm is a showing of one the Scor videos, so why not relive the fun and excitement of Scor in a warm friendly environment and all free of charge.

Computer Classes will commence on Tuesday 11th January 2011 in the Vocational School, Ballinamore from 7.00-9.00p.m.and will run on Tuesdays at the same time for five weeks finishing on 8th February 2011.Arrangements for the Christmas Party have been finalised for Friday 17th December 2010 at 7.00p.m. in Glenview Guest House. Club History on DVD

There are copies still available of the DVD brought out for the 125 anniversary of the club. There are a few for sale in the Genealogy Centre and Philip Murphy’s. They would be nice for Christmas presents for anyone from Ballinamore or anyone interested in the town and club.

New Gospel Choir for South Leitrim.A new Ecumenical Gospel Choir is being formed in the South Leitrim area.  The aim of this choir is: (a) to bring people from all religions and cultural backgrounds together to share and enjoy gospel music and (b) to work towards achieving a standard that will enable us to perform for theatres, corporate events, charity events etc. Gospel music is the soul of religious music! Mc Cartin SD sweep the boards at Connaught Regional Championships

Local dance school the Mc Cartin SD had a very successful outing recently at the CRN Shannon Western Regional Championship. The two day event held in Roscommon act as a means of qualification for the All Ireland CRN Irish Dancing Championships which will be held in the Citywest Hotel and Conference Centre, Dublin in May 2011.  48 pupils from the Mc Cartin SD qualified for the All Ireland following two days of intense competition where over 400 dancers from across the west and midlands competed for the coveted places. The Mc Cartin SD entered 6 Ceilí teams, all of whom qualified for the All Ireland Championships.  Dancing the under 9 Ceili and collecting two sliver placing were: Dearbhaile Currid, Ella Galligan-Maguire, Rachel Mc Intyre, Conor Edwards, Cillian Cullen, Kate Gilheany, Edel Kiernan, Ónisia Mimna. The Under 12 teams consisting of Cormac, Aoife Sammon, Ciarán, Conor Cullen, Eoghan, Ellen Keegan, Emma Sorohan,  Megan Doonan, Jack Gilheany, Caoimhe Gaffney, Stephanie Daly, Niamh Donegan, Tom Gilheany, Shane Mc Gourty, James Lennon, Orla Kiernan  collected a gold, silver and bronze placing, while the senior team of Tadhg Murray, Ciara Gaffney, Paula Mc Partland, Owen Mc Partland, Eoghan Keegan, Sinead Maguire, Blaithin Donohoe and Conor Gaffney took the Ceili Soisear (Under 18) title.

Congratulations to the pupils and their teacher Karl Mc Cartin ODCRN on their huge success. The Mc Cartin SD will conclude for Christmas holidays on Saturday 11th December and will recommence classes  in Ballinamore Community Centre on Saturday  January 15th  2011.
